GRP or Galvanized? A Modular Water Tank Selection Guide
The most critical decision when choosing a modular water tank is the panel material. The wrong material means corrosion, hygiene problems or unnecessary cost. In this guide we compare the four main materials by intended use.
Pre-Galvanized Steel
Manufactured from sheet that is zinc-coated at the factory in a continuous-line process. It is the most economical solution for indoor projects with low atmospheric corrosion risk, fire hydrant lines and industrial process water.
- Suitable for indoor, process and fire water
- Entry level, optimum cost
- Not as long-lived outdoors as hot-dip galvanized
Hot-Dip Galvanized
The formed panels are immersed in a bath of molten zinc, creating a complete, sealed metallurgical coating across the entire surface. It is the heavy-duty option for outdoor sites, high humidity and environments with high corrosion risk.
- Zinc protection across the entire panel surface
- Ideal for agricultural irrigation and outdoor fire reserves
- Low maintenance, long service life
AISI 304/316 Stainless Steel
The standard for projects that require food-grade hygiene. It preserves the water's taste and odor and delivers the highest corrosion resistance — from aggressive chemical processes to drinking water reserves in hotels and premium residential buildings.
- Hygienic, food-grade interior surface for drinking water
- 304 or 316 selected according to the liquid's chemistry
- Highest upfront cost, longest service life
GRP (Glass-Fiber Reinforced Plastic)
Glass-fiber reinforced composite panels are hot-press molded (SMC). Approved for drinking water, fully corrosion-resistant, and — because the panels are opaque — light cannot enter, which prevents algae growth inside. Its light weight makes installation easy in rooftop plant rooms and tight spaces.
- Food-regulation compliant, drinking water approved (WRAS)
- Blocks light — resists algae and bacterial build-up
- Lightweight, thermally insulating; easy to install in tight, hard-to-access spaces
Which One Should You Choose?
In short: hot-dip galvanized stands out for outdoor sites, stainless or GRP for drinking water, and pre-galvanized for indoor and fire applications. Your project's hydrostatic pressure, water chemistry and location determine the final call.
